Top 10 Indian embedded companies!

It has been over two years since I wrote the piece — Top 10 embedded companies in India! It has been the most read, and by far, the most commented.  Now, it is time to do a review, or, more suitably, a recap!

First, who are the top 10 (Indian) embedded systems and software companies in India? My list, in no particular order, would read something like this:

1. Ittiam
2. Sasken
3. CMC
4. C-DAC
5. L&T EmSyS
6. ProcSys
7. eInfochips
8. Mistral
9. iWave Systems/Global Edge
10. Vayavya Labs

There are several firms in Pune and Hyderabad, who probably deserve a name.  There may be some folks may not agree with this list, but I would go with these, for now. The next change could be two years down the road!

Some may even question the presence of CMC and C-DAC in this list. However, CMC has well over 30+ years of extensive experience in providing consulting, design and development services and testing services in real-time systems.

C-DAC has capabilities in high-performance computing as well as grid computing. It also has unit focusing on professional electronics, including embedded and VLSI products.

Ittiam and Sasken remain in the top 5 category. ProcSys is a new entrant, besides iWave, Global Edge and Vayavya Labs.

Now, may I know if you have any doubts, as well as moves, additions and/or changes (MAC)? 😉

  1. Hi Pradeep

Interesting list. What is the criteria for drawing up this — with due respect to the companies that are already on it?

There are a whole bunch of smaller companies who have been doing very innovative work. AllGo Embedded Systems and Epigon out of Bangalore, Jasmin Infotech out of Chennai etc. [Disclaimer: These are companies whose top management I know — though I am no longer involved with any of them. So am not carrying a brief for them…..]. What about Aricent (though they are PE owned now), Persistant Systems, HCL, Wipro, TCS ….?

Plus, don’t forget that the both the Avionics, Automotive and Medical Electronics industries have a massive amount of embedded software being developed in-house. A lot of it is hardcore DSP and micro-controller programming and they also struggle with high-reliability as an added “constraint” — in addition to the usual issues with footprint, performance headroom etc.

The successive research reports on the Indian Semicon. industry have also highlighted that more than 80% of the workforce in the Indian semicon. eco-system are ESW (embedded software) developers. Even if you want to exclude the workforce working in MNC India Dev Centres, that still leaves a huge chunk working with Services companies. Have they been counted?

It would be good if you could synthesize the various data points available across industry reports and paint a landscape of what kind of work is actually going on. I have a deep suspicion that the bulk is porting, testing and maintenance — though I sincerely wish that I am proved wrong! 🙂

    Cheers

    PVG Menon
    VANN Consulting.

    1. PVG, as you can see, these are ‘purely’ Indian companies! 😉 I shall synthesize data points sometime later, ok?

BTW, you also mentioned avionics today, didn’t you? I know, where you are coming from! 😉

Now, can you do something? Prepare your own blog, put in your own stuff, and best of luck with it! 😉

  2. Happy to see our company being listed here! I certainly expect a lot of debate/discussions could come up to see on what parameters the rating has been carried out.

  3. Hi Pradeep,

I went through both the blogs of 2009 and this one.. as is evident, Tata Elxsi is missing from the list now. What’s your take on Tata Elxsi? Regards.

  4. Hi

A good piece of work…. Am working as embedded designer. The company is in fact is small and last two products I did was related to the medical field. Now, I am interested to know about those companies where I can apply further so as to get in to medical embedded.

  5. Hi Pradeep,

I’m really happy to see our company, iWave Systems, listed in the “Top 10 Indian companies!”.
